In a thought-provoking panel, supported by IJA and organized by IJA and AST, persecuted journalists from Turkey and beyond came together to emphasize the critical importance of upholding democracy and protecting freedom of the press. Amidst a backdrop of increasing authoritarianism and censorship, the discussion highlighted the challenges faced by journalists in Turkey and the broader implications for democracy worldwide.
One of the panelists, Abdulhamit Bilici, former Editor-in-Chief of Zaman Newspaper and a member of the IJA US Advisory Board, emphasized the essential role of journalism: “To be the voice of the voiceless, to be the voice of the oppressed, to be the voice of the persecuted—this is one of the main functions of a journalist. What we are discussing now, the silencing of these voices, signifies that a large number of people, a significant population, has lost its voice. It is not merely the rights of journalists at stake; it’s society losing its most important advocates.”
The panel included Se Hoon Kim, Senior Correspondent at Global Strat View; Abdulhamit Bilici; Arbana Xharra, an Investigative Journalist; Ergun Babahan, a Journalist and former Editor-in-Chief of Sabah Newspaper; and Kani Xulam, President of the American Kurdish Network. They brought a wealth of diverse perspectives and experiences, addressing issues such as the erosion of democratic norms in Turkey, the weaponization of migration, and the need for international solidarity. These speakers delved into the core issues affecting their communities and the global media landscape.
Bilici also shared his harrowing experience: “On the 4th of March, 2016, the newspaper was brutally occupied, and I was ousted. Fired, the newspaper was transformed into a mouthpiece within 24 hours… This is just one of the 200 media outlets that were silenced… Currently, at least 25 journalists are jailed in Turkey, a country ranked 165 out of 180 in the World Press Freedom Index.”
Arbana Xharra’s account revealed the dangerous nature of truth-telling in environments where authoritarian influences stifle free speech. “Today I’m in exile, six years now. I moved here after I was brutally attacked the night I was speaking on a live TV show about the mosques that Erdogan was building, and about the money he was introducing into Kosovo not through banks but in cash, and how he was influencing our society,” she recounted, highlighting the risks faced by those who expose the opaque activities of powerful figures. Forced into exile following her public revelations, her story underscores the critical role of the press in maintaining societal checks and balances against corrupt power dynamics. Her experience serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by journalists worldwide, particularly those who challenge the integrity of influential leaders and their covert agendas.
A recurring theme throughout the event was the role of journalism as a pillar of democracy. Despite facing threats, intimidation, and imprisonment, these courageous journalists emphasized the need for truth-telling and accountability in the face of authoritarian regimes. They urged the international community to stand in solidarity with journalists facing persecution and to advocate for their release.
The discussion also illuminated the complex dynamics within Turkish society, including divisions among diaspora communities and the challenges of fostering unity across ideological lines.
