Media blackout to Halk TV and TELE 1 screens for 5 days

Due to the decision taken in the Radio and Television Supreme Council, Halk TV and TELE 1 were sentenced to 5 days of suspension.

It was reported that the screens of the two television channels would be suspended for five days due to the broadcasting penalty instead of the program interruption. İlhan Taşçı emphasized that RTÜK will give a punishment for the first time under the current law.

Speaking to Hüseyin Şimşek from Birgün Newspaper, RTÜK Member Taşçı said the following about the decision:

“The Radio and Television Supreme Court that consider an order the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s“ we will get rid of the media virus ”words realized his second leg of the operation aimed at muting the TV channels trying to make dissent, original and free broadcasting. It was the first stage of this process to make sanctions against the penalties that could result in TV shutdowns.

At today’s Supreme Board meeting, TELE 1 and Halk TV were sentenced to five days of suspension. The decision was made by majority vote.

The screens of these televisions will be dimmed for 5 days between the dates determined by RTÜK. In the general broadcast type, the channels broadcasting at the national level will get screen blackout for the first time in the history of RTÜK (Radio and Television Supreme Court) under the current law.

This is the censorship, silencing and darkening of TVs that directly question the power, report the wrong when it criticizes, follow the truth and try to convey the realities in the country and the world, not the perceptions created at the desk to their audience. With this decision taken by RTÜK, the “backbone” of the freedom of the press, which is the sine qua non of democracy, has been broken.

Another point that is as serious as the heavy penalty, if these television channels receive one more penalty from the same article, the licenses of the channels will be canceled this time. In other words, the screens will be completely darkened, unplugged, and televisions will be turned off. Not only is this television channels, the page is closed press freedom Turkey, it will be closed. In the freedom of press struggle page, this period will take its place as a black spot. ”
