Interview with Demirtaş considered ”crime”

Journalist Hayri Demir’s interview with Selahattin Demirtaş, the former co-chairman of HDP and the photo he took during the interview, was shown as evidence in the case where he was charged with being a member of an organization ”and making propaganda of an terrorist organization”.

At the case of Hayri Demir, who is charged of journalistic activities, an interesting development has happened.  Demir’s interview with People’s Democratic Party’s (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtas was considered an crime factor. In the case opened in the 15th Assize Court on charges of being a member of an organization and  making propaganda of an organization, an interview with Demirtas was shown among the evidence included in the research report.

Demirtaş’s photo which he took during the interview and interview text published on October 1, 2015 on his social media account was among the accusations.

In the report prepared by the Bolu Police Department, took place under the name of 11th sharing, the report said,“ it was seen that the person, as a DİHA reporter, shared the photo of his interview with Selahattin Demirtaş who is currently in detention.”

About the Case

On February 28, 2017, a “thief” broke into the house of journalist Hayri Demir, living in the Çankaya district of Ankara. Instead of taking the money-filled piggy bank on the table in the room, the person or people took only two memory cards from the camera in the drawer. With Demir’s notice, police came to his house and took fingerprint investigation and took astatement down.

At the end of the investigation that lasted for about two years, the indictment showed the news images and photographs on the memory cards stolen from Demir’s house as evidence for the blame. In the indictment where only the news materials obtained in the content of working cards were subject to charges, Demir was demanded to be sentenced to imprisonment of from 9 to 22.5 years.

The hearing, which Demirtaş’s photo was considered among the evidence, will be held on 23 October 2019.
