IJ4EU 2023, the European Conference on Media and Press Freedom, took place in Brussels on 12-13 October. The International Journalists Association (IJA) participated in the conference, which brought together freelance and staff journalists from across Europe with leading experts in watchdog journalism. During our meetings we informed the participants about the activities of our association and our magazine Journalist Post.

The keynote speech of the conference, which discussed important initiatives to support journalism and investigative reporting, focused on the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in journalism. The keynote addressed the multifaceted role of AI in journalism, including a comprehensive examination of its potential, risks, challenges and real-world applications, as well as its potential to open up new avenues of research. Pierre Romera Zhang, ICIJ’s Chief Technology Officer, shared his experience in this context.

The conference also discussed the ethical challenges of immigration and the role of investigative journalism in this area, as well as the opportunities and challenges of investigating the war in Ukraine and cross-border reporting. In this context, experienced journalists Elena Loginova, Anna Myroniuk and Yanina Korniyenko shared their views with the participants.

On the second day of the event, the complexity of financing European policies and transparency issues were discussed. They also discussed how to make investigative journalism projects more effective and what needs to be considered to ensure the success of teamwork.

In the closing plenary, leading figures such as Lutz Kinkel and Frane Maroević reflected on the results of the meeting and discussed future directions.
