Strasbourg Demonstration Echoes Calls for Justice in Turkey

The “Justice for All” march held in front of the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg garnered widespread international attention. Journalists and volunteers from the International Journalists Association (IJA) played a key role in broadcasting calls for justice to a global audience. Several Members of the European Parliament joined the event or expressed support via solidarity messages.

Live Coverage and Social Media Engagement

Throughout the march, IJA-affiliated journalists and volunteers provided live coverage and real-time updates on social media. Using hashtags like #JusticeForAll and #StrasbourgMeetingForJustice, they reached millions across platforms, especially X (formerly Twitter). They shared powerful visuals, on-site interviews, and compelling snapshots, vividly portraying the atmosphere in Strasbourg and spotlighting the ongoing political detentions, press freedom violations, and struggles for justice in Turkey.

The coverage emphasized demands for judicial independence and press freedom. Protesters’ slogans, banners, and firsthand testimonies were captured and shared globally, shedding light on the plight of imprisoned politicians, journalists, and students in Turkey.

An Expanding Global Campaign

To strengthen the campaign’s reach, IJA volunteers produced infographics, videos, and press releases. The event was spearheaded by the NGO Peaceful Actions in collaboration with 24 human rights organizations. IJA joined other civil society groups in co-signing a letter—available in three languages—addressed to the Council of Europe and ECHR, urging concrete actions to stop legal injustices in Turkey and enforce existing court rulings.

Pedaling for Rights: Cyclists Arrive in Strasbourg

A notable part of the protest was the “Pedal for Rights” initiative. Cyclists from five European countries converged on Strasbourg, including exiled journalist Nurullah Albayrak. Leading the demonstration, the cyclists symbolized perseverance and determination in the struggle for justice and human rights.

Youth in Action: Young IJA Volunteers on the Ground

Young IJA volunteers conducted multilingual interviews, delivering the message “You Are Not Alone” to attendees. They also supported camera and photography work, playing a central role in media production and storytelling.

Message to the World: “Don’t Stay Silent!”

The IJA and its volunteers worked tirelessly to amplify the justice march as a powerful voice for human rights. The core message—“Don’t stay silent!”—was conveyed to the international community, urging global institutions and observers to speak out against the ongoing rights violations in Turkey. The IJA reinforced the civil society’s call for decisive action from bodies like the Council of Europe and the ECHR.
