The International Press Institute (IPI) has released its weekly report covering press freedom violations in Turkey between 5 and 12 September 2025. According to the findings, one journalist was assaulted, one sentenced to prison, and eight are under investigation.
During protests in Istanbul, journalist Fatoş Erdoğan was shot with plastic bullets by police despite identifying herself as press. Journalist Mehmet Baran Kılıç was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison over his reporting on Boğaziçi University’s administration. Reporter Tolga Şardan was detained following a story on a leaked government database and later released under a travel ban.
In Eskişehir, seven journalists are facing terrorism charges over their social media posts. Meanwhile, access to journalist Timur Soykan’s article on an official’s son, as well as the YouTube channel of journalist Can Dündar, was blocked on grounds of “national security.”
IPI warned that internet restrictions, RTÜK’s warnings to broadcasters, and mounting government pressure pose a serious threat to press freedom in the country.
