As the International Journalists Association (IJA) commemorates International Women’s Day 2024, we stand in solidarity with women journalists and media workers across the globe, recognizing their indelible contributions to the field of journalism and reiterating our commitment to ensuring their safety. The courage and resilience of women journalists, who often report from the frontlines of conflict, speak truth to power and bring untold stories to light, are the backbone of a free and independent press.
However, the road to equality is fraught with challenges. Women journalists face unique risks that impede their ability to work freely — from gender-based violence and harassment to systemic discrimination within the media industry. These threats are not only a violation of individual rights but also a direct assault on the diversity and freedom of the press. When the voices of women journalists are silenced, the world is deprived of critical perspectives.
The safety of women journalists and media workers is paramount. It is not enough to acknowledge the dangers they face; we must actively work to create environments where they can perform their duties without fear of retaliation or harm. This includes implementing stringent safety protocols, offering legal and psychological support, and fostering a workplace culture that champions equality and respect. Media organizations and governments must be held accountable for protecting the rights of women journalists and ensuring that perpetrators of violence and harassment are brought to justice.

On this International Women’s Day, the IJA reaffirms its dedication to the safety and empowerment of women journalists and media workers. We as IJA therefore place a special focus on young female journalists in our promotion of young talent and want to make a sustainable contribution to strengthening female journalists and media professionals in the European media landscape.
We call on media organizations, policymakers, and the international community to join us in this crucial mission. Together, we can combat the challenges faced by women in journalism and pave the way for a more equitable, safe, and vibrant media landscape.
