Press release on journalist murders in Mexico

Over the years, several journalists have lost their lives while reporting about human rights violations, corruption, and doing their job in Mexico. The last week’s killings of the journalists, Luis Enrique Ramirez, Sheila García and Yessenia Mollinedo have led to greater challenges in the security of journalists.

A total of 94 murders per day were recorded in Mexico in 2021. About 100,000 people are believed to have gone missing. According to this, 7 journalists were killed last year due to their journalistic activities in the country. Mexico thus became the most dangerous country for journalists for the third year in a row. In Mexico, journalists are the target of drug cartels and corrupt local politicians.

International Journalists Aassociation e.V  calls on Mexican authorities to ensure swift accountability for killings and ensure the safety of journalists.
