Journalists killed in Israel-Gaza conflict War between Israel and Hamas

CPJ Middle East Coordinator Sherif Mansour stresses that journalists are civilians who do important work in times of crisis and should not be targeted: “Journalists* across the region are making great sacrifices to cover this heartbreaking conflict. The journalist and co-founder of Ain Media, a Palestinian professional media services company, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, according to the official Palestinian Authority news agency Wafa and Sky News.

Mohammed Ali

Ali, a journalist with Al-Shabab Radio (Youth Radio), is killed in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza, according to the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate and the Cairo-based Al-Dostor newspaper.

Khalil Abu Aathra

Abu Aathra, a videographer for the Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV station, was killed along with his brother in an Israeli air strike in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and the Amman-based Roya News Agency said.

The journalist and director of the Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV channel was killed in an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and the Palestinian news agency Safa.

Balousha, a journalist and the administrative and financial director of the Gaza office of the local media channel Palestine Today, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the al-Saftawi neighbourhood in northern Gaza, according to Anadolu Agency and The Guardian.

Issam Bhar

Issam Bhar, a journalist with the Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza, according to TRT Arabia and the Cairo-based Arabic newspaper Shorouk News.

Abdulhadi Habib

The journalist, who worked for Al-Manara News Agency and HQ News Agency, was killed along with several members of his family in a rocket attack on his home near the Zeitoun neighbourhood, south of Gaza City. This according to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and the International Middle East Media Center, an independent news organisation run by Palestinians living in the Palestinian territories.

Dawas, a Palestine Chronicle contributor and writer for We Are Not Numbers (WANN), a non-profit Palestinian youth-led project, was killed in an Israeli rocket attack on his family’s home in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahia, north of Jabalia, according to WANN and the Palestine Chronicle.

Salam Mema

On this day, the death of freelance journalist Mema was confirmed. Mema was the head of the Women Journalists Committee of the Palestinian Media Assembly, an organisation that promotes the media work of Palestinian journalists. Her body was recovered from the rubble three days after the Israeli air strike on her home in Jabalia camp in northern Gaza on 10 October, according to the Palestinian Journalists’ Association and the official Palestinian Authority news agency Wafa.

Husam Mubarak

Mubarak, a journalist with the Hamas-affiliated Al Aqsa Radio, was killed in an Israeli air strike in northern Gaza, according to the Skeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate.

Issam Abdallah

Abdallah, a Beirut-based videographer for the Reuters news agency, was killed by Israeli shelling near the Lebanese border. Abdallah and a group of other journalists were covering the exchange of fire between Israeli forces and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah near Al-Shaab in southern Lebanon.

Ahmed Shehab, a journalist with the Sowt Al-Asra (Radio Voice of the Prisoners) radio station, is killed along with his wife and three children in an Israeli airstrike on his home in Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and the London-based news website The New Arab report.

Abu Matar, a freelance photojournalist, was killed in an Israeli air strike in the southern Gaza town of Rafah, according to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and the official Palestinian Authority news agency Wafa.

Saeed al-Taweel

Saeed al-Taweel, editor-in-chief of the Al-Khamsa News website, was killed when Israeli warplanes targeted an area with several media facilities in the Rimal district of the western Gaza Strip, specifically the Hiji building, according to the British newspaper The Independent, the Qatar-based English-language news channel Al Jazeera English, and the official Palestinian Authority news agency Wafa.

Mohammed Sobh

Sobh, a photographer for the Khabar news agency, was also reportedly killed in the airstrike in the Rimal district.

Hisham Alnwajha

Alnwajha, a journalist with the “Khabar” news agency, was also reportedly killed in the same airstrike that killed Al-Taweel and Sobh.

Assaad Shamlakh

Shamlakh, a freelance journalist, was killed along with nine members of his family in an Israeli airstrike on their home in Sheikh Ijlin, a neighbourhood in the southern Gaza Strip, according to the Beirut-based non-profit research and advocacy organisation The Legal Agenda (LA) and BBC Arabic.

Shay Regev

Regev, editor of TMI, the gossip and entertainment section of the Hebrew-language daily Ma’ariv, is killed in a Hamas attack on Israel. Shai Regev’s death was confirmed after she had been missing for six days and was reported to her family, according to Maariv and The Times of Israel.

Ayelet Arnin

The 22-year-old news editor for Israel Radio Kan was killed in a Hamas attack in southern Israel. According to the Times of Israel and Yahoo, a friend informed her parents of her murder.

Yaniv Zohar

Zohar, an Israeli photographer who worked for the Hebrew-language daily Israel Hayom, was killed in a Hamas attack on Kibbutz Nahal Oz in southern Israel. Israel Hayom and Israel National News reported that his wife and two daughters were also killed in the attack. Israel Hayom editor-in-chief Omer Lachmanovitch told CPJ that Yaniv had been working that day.

Mohammad Al-Salhi

Al-Salhi, a photojournalist who worked for the Fourth PA News Agency, was shot and killed near a Palestinian refugee camp in central Gaza. This was reported by the official Palestinian Authority news agency, Wafa, and the Journalist Support Committee (JSC), a non-profit organisation that promotes media rights in the Middle East.

Mohammad Jarghoun

Mohammad Jarghoun, a journalist with Smart Media, was shot dead while covering the conflict in an area east of the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian press freedom group MADA and the JSC.

Ibrahim Mohammad Lafi

Ibrahim Mohammad Lafi, a photographer for Ain Media, was shot dead at the Erez crossing between Gaza and Israel, according to MADA and JSC.

Al-Sudani, a journalist for the Reuters news agency, was wounded in the same attack that killed Abdallah, near the border in southern Lebanon, Reuters reports.

Maher Nazeh

Maher Nazeh, a Reuters journalist, was wounded in the same attack in southern Lebanon.

Elie Brakhya

Elie Brakhya, a contributor to Al-Jazeera TV, was also injured in the shelling in southern Lebanon, according to Al-Jazeera TV.

Carmen Joukhadar

Carmen Joukhadar, a reporter for Al-Jazeera TV, was also injured in the attack in southern Lebanon.

Christina Assi

Assi, a photographer for the French news agency Agence France-Press (AFP), was injured in the same attack in southern Lebanon, according to AFP and France 24.

Dylan Collins

Dylan Collins, a video journalist for AFP, was also injured in the shelling in southern Lebanon.

Ibrahim Qanan, a correspondent for Al-Ghad channel, was injured by shrapnel in the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, MADA and JSC reported.

Firas Lutfi

Police attacked Lutfi, a correspondent for the private Sky News Arabia channel, along with other Sky News journalists in the southern city of Ashkelon, according to members of the television crew. Lutfi said Israeli police pointed guns at his head, forced him to undress, confiscated the team’s phones and forced them to leave the area under police escort.

Palestinian photographer for Al-Najah TV, reported missing by MADA. Al-Wahidi’s family later informed the media that the journalist had been arrested by the Israeli army.

Haitham Abdelwahid

Palestinian photographer with the Ain Media Agency, also reported missing by MADA.

 

Roee Idan

The Israeli Ynet photographer whose wife was killed is missing, and his family fears that he and his three-year-old daughter have been taken hostage. CPJ has confirmed that he was at work the day his family was attacked.
