Although exile means being taken away from the place of life as a word, it actually means taking a person out of life. Forced exiles take place in every period and are caused by dictators in general affect journalists the most.
The fourth issue of the Journalist Post, which contains stories of journalists forced to live a life of exile in different countries of the world, was published on May 3, World Press Freedom day with the cover of “Journalism Inspite of Everything”. Monique Hofmann from Germany’s largest journalist organization DJU, Executive Board Director of the South African National Editors Forum SANEF Reggy Moalusi, Turkish Journalists Union President Gökhan Durmuş, Dutch Journalists Association Board member Ana Karadarevic supported with their articles on behalf of the associations. In addition to the files of the region’s 7 most well-known journalist team from Brazil, guest pens from Australia, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Palestine, Ukraine, Greece and Malta have enriched JP with their articles on press and freedom of expression issues.
An exclusive interview with Marcela Turati, one of the world’s well-known journalists from Mexico, where, according to statistics, the highest number of journalists were killed in a country not at war, was also widely demonstrated in the latest issue.
An interview was also held with journalist Marianna Kakaounaki, who made the documentary ‘Invisible’, which included an interview with Yawsef Beth Turo, one of the founders of Suroyo TV, on Syriac Media. The story of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed in Malta, was written by German journalist Iris Rohmann. JOURNALISM INSPITE OF EVERYTHING
According to the data of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), as a result of the Taliban’s re-control of Afghanistan in the last quarter of last year, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the beginning of this year, journalists were targeted in Mexico and Haiti, the number of people who lost their lives in the first 3 months of the year was 15.
The hybrid war is underway, which plays an important role in the disinformation campaigns of the pro-Russian media. In Mexico, known as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, journalists are struggling with the threat of organized criminal organizations and the aggressive and polarizing rhetoric of the President. In Haiti, journalists are again targeted by gangs. Journalists are still in prison in countries such as Turkey and Belarus.
The rankings of the countries in the published press freedom index change every year. Unfortunately, governments do not have any special efforts to get to the top of the index in a positive sense. It is during such a period that the importance of the Journalist Post comes to light. Many journalists from different countries of the world come together on World Press Freedom day and continue Dec advocacy of freedom of expression and the press through writing.
