Greek journalist Evangelos Areteos, who has been living in Turkey for a while and reporting from Turkey for 23 years, announced that he was deported from Turkey. He stated that when he landed at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport from Brussels, the police met him there. He was questioned for about 7 hours so to say “chatting”, and announced that he was sent back to Brussels after the interrogation.
“As far as I understand from the questions, the main reason was a trip I made to the southeast of Turkey and to the north of Syria in 2015,” Areteos said.
The deportation of Evangelos Areteos, a writer of the Greek-based newspaper Real, has reignited the debate about press freedom in Turkey. Press professional organizations stressed that the decision should be reversed.
