The European Court of Human Rights, which examined the application of journalist Ersin Şanlı, announced its decision on 12 December.
The Court ruled that there were insufficient grounds for journalist Şanlı’s arrest and that there was no reason for his prolonged detention and ordered Turkey to pay compensation of around 3,000 euros, excluding non-pecuniary damage.
Ersin Şanlı was dismissed from his position as news director of TRT Turkey, arrested and sent to Sincan Prison as part of an unlawful investigation launched after 15 July 2016. Şanlı, whose yellow press card was revoked, was sentenced to 9 years in prison, tortured and detained for almost 3 years.
Journalist Ersin Şanlı, who played a role in the development of TRT’s breaking news coverage and its nationwide news network, also played an important role in TRT Haber winning the Best News Channel in Europe award in 2012, standing out among national and international news channels.
