Pressure on independent media in Turkey continues to intensify. The country’s Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has once again taken action against opposition-aligned broadcasters, escalating concerns over censorship and media freedom. Sözcü TV has been hit with a 10-day broadcast ban, while Halk TV and TELE1 have been fined.
Broadcast Ban for Sözcü TV
The penalty against Sözcü TV was justified by RTÜK based on the channel’s coverage of an investigation targeting Ekrem İmamoğlu, Istanbul’s mayor and the opposition CHP’s presidential candidate. RTÜK accused the channel of “inciting hatred and enmity among the public” during its live coverage of the legal proceedings.
The decision was officially communicated to the broadcaster, which will be required to go off air starting June 1. Observers note that this constitutes one of the harshest penalties short of license revocation.
Fines for Halk TV and TELE1
In the same session, RTÜK also imposed two fines on Halk TV and one on TELE1. Tuncay Keser, an RTÜK member appointed from the CHP quota, stated that the sanctions were largely based on complaints filed by the construction firm Taşyapı. He criticized the council for acting as a shield for the company and punishing journalists for critical coverage.
One of the fines against Halk TV was related to the program “Açıkça”, which featured claims about alleged connections between Istanbul city and Şişli district officials and criminal networks. RTÜK imposed a 3 percent administrative fine based on the critical remarks made during the broadcast.
The second fine was related to the show “Neden Sonuç”, during which journalist İbrahim Kahveci stated: “This government does not value science or empirical knowledge. There is no academic quality left in universities. They’re training doctors who have never seen a cadaver.” RTÜK considered these comments punishable as well.
TELE1 Targeted for Criticism of RTÜK and State Banks
TELE1 was sanctioned for criticism voiced by anchor Musa Özuğurlu, who questioned RTÜK’s and state-owned banks’ advertising policies. The channel was similarly fined 3 percent of its monthly revenue.
Systematic Pressure on Opposition Media
These latest penalties further highlight the systematic repression of independent and opposition media in Turkey. The broadcast ban and financial sanctions against Sözcü TV, Halk TV, and TELE1 reflect the worsening state of media freedom in the country. While pro-government outlets remain untouched, critical voices face escalating censorship and economic pressure.
