Algorithmic bans are erasing people digitally!

Policy Report – Issue II | October 2025
Published: November 3, 2025
By the International Journalists Association (IJA)

The International Journalists Association (IJA) presents the second issue of its global policy report series, Silenced Voices, Digital Resistance: Navigating Press Freedom Challenges, exposing the rise of platform authoritarianism — a new system where state repression converges with the silent complicity of Big Tech.

Published following the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the report highlights how journalists are being read, ranked, and erased digitally — a new form of repression and psychological violence — as social media platforms increasingly act as extensions of state control rather than spaces of free expression.

The policy report provides a comprehensive, evidence-based analysis of:

State-issued takedown orders and algorithmic suppression in authoritarian environments;
Legal and ethical obligations of technology companies under international human rights law;
Policy recommendations for the European Union, the United Nations, and global civil society.

“Our findings show that digital repression is no longer a local issue — it is the architecture of a new authoritarianism,”said Yasemin Aydın, Director of International Relations & Public Engagement at IJA. “Algorithmic bans are erasing people digitally; the very systems built to connect us are turning into digital prison walls. Governments and Big Tech must both be held accountable for silencing journalists under the guise of moderation.”

The IJA calls for binding transparency standardsindependent oversight mechanisms, and digital sanctuary measures for silenced and exiled journalists.

Tomorrow (November 4, 2025) at 1:00 p.m. (EST) / 19:00 (CET), the IJA will launch an international social media campaign amplifying the findings of the report and inviting journalists, media organizations, and human rights defenders worldwide to join the call against platform authoritarianism.
