Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has sparked global outrage after it was revealed that it had generated sexualized deepfake images, mainly targeting women and children. Following the international backlash, restrictions were imposed on this feature of Grok, which operates via the platform X.
In recent weeks, Grok had been responding to a surge of user requests described by experts as “malicious.” Specialists warned that some of the generated images appeared to depict minors.
The European Union strongly condemned the chatbot’s actions, calling them “illegal” and “disturbing,” and called for an investigation into Grok.
Among the political figures criticizing the situation was UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described it as “shameful” and “disgusting,” stressing that it could not be tolerated. He said X must take control of the issue.
Under the new policy, Grok will only respond to image editing requests from paying subscribers. This means that the names and payment details of users making such requests will be recorded on the platform. However, experts argue that this measure restricts access rather than addressing the root of the problem.
