The reporter for 10Haber was detained following his posts regarding the investigation process of CHP-affiliated Esenyurt Mayor Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özer, who was also arrested, and a trustee appointed in his place. Karabay faces charges including “targeting individuals involved in counterterrorism,” “insulting public officials,” and “deliberately spreading misleading information to the public.”
During his questioning by the police, Karabay is reported to have stated:
“The news covered the reasons cited for Ahmet Özer’s arrest, as outlined in the detention referral document written by the Deputy Chief Prosecutor. These details were reflected in the news. There was no distortion or inclusion of anything not present in the document. Thus, the accusation of ‘spreading misleading information to the public’ appears to fall apart here. The allegations are baseless. I am merely fulfilling my journalistic duties. I request a decision of non-prosecution regarding the charges against me.”
