INTERNET BROADCASTS GET RTÜK INSPECTION AS WELL

The establishments broadcast through the internet are now under the control of RTÜK (The Supreme Board of Radio and Television).

After the official gazette publishing of “The Regulation for Presentation of Radio and Television and The Optional Broadcasts through The Intenet Environment”, internet platforms, like Netflix, have to achieve a RTÜK broadcasting license.

There will also be obligations to be incorporated and to pay tax for those sites.

“Our goal is to designate the terms for inspection”

The aim of the regulation that published in the official gazette is transferred as such:

“The goal of this regulation is to designate the procedures and principles about the presentation and transmission of the optional broadcasting services through the internet, and to give broadcasting license to the media service providers and broadcasting transmission right to the platform operators, and to inspect the mentioned publishings.”

Akdeniz: The access to Netflix could be denied

Prof. Dr. Yaman Akdeniz Lecturer of Faculty of Law at Bilgi University Dr. included this in his evaluation via Twitter:

“The regulation about 29/A article which gives RTÜK authority to censor the internet has just become valid today. Access to Netflix and the news sources broadcast from abroad such as DW Turkish might soon be restrained. That’s what is meant by Justice Reform.

“Imposing license obligation to the frequency problem-free internet and radio broadcast only stands for control and censorship.” And the first target would be the news sources which devoted to Turkey and broadcasted in Turkish just as BBC Turkish and DW Turkish , as mentioned in the SETA (Foundation of Politics, Economy and Society Survey) report.

Therefore what is aimed is to take control of the sources that make broadcasting for radio and television in Turkish , especially abroad, and can not be controlled from Turkey. With high license costs and fines, making those type of broadcasts impossible is intended.”
